چکیده
The present research addressed the relation between catastrophizing, depression and response expectancies in anticipation of an experimental pain procedure. One hundred and twenty undergraduates (48 men, 72 women) participated in exchange for course credit. Prior to immersing one arm in a container of ice water, participants were asked to complete measures of catastrophizing and depression, and to estimate the degree of pain and emotional distress they expected to experience. After a 1-min immersion, participants rated their actual experience. Pain expectancies partially mediated the relation between catastrophizing and pain experience. Pain expectancies also mediated the relation between depression and pain experience. Catastrophizing, but not depression, was associated with a tendency to underestimate pain and emotional distress. The implications of these ®ndings for the conceptual distinctiveness of catastrophizing and depression are discussed. Discussion also examines the potential implications of the present ®ndings for pain management interventions. q 2001 International Association for the Study of Pain. Applications of standard Sturmian words to elementary number theory
This note is a short survey, by no means intended to be complete, of some of the descriptions which have been given of standard Sturmian words, and of some of the applications of these descriptions to elementary number theory.. (‘Elementary number theory’ is interpreted fairly broadly.) The descriptions and applications below have appeared before, expect for Fact 4, Application 1, and the proof...

Processing of nociceptive information can be modulated at various levels in spinal cord that may range from changes of neurotransmitter release from primary afferent Ad or C-®bres to excitability changes of spinal interneurones or motoneurones. The site and mechanism of action of spinal analgesics has been assessed with a number of in vivo and in vitro methods with sometimes con ̄icting results....

Recent research indicates that people who are fearful of pain tend to report more negative pain experiences. It also seems that attentional mechanisms may be particularly important in the perception of painful stimuli, especially amongst pain fearful individuals. Drawing on a paradigm used to examine biased cognitive processes in the emotional disorders, the current study investigated whether t...

Animal studies suggest that fear inhibits pain whereas anxiety enhances it; however it is unclear whether these effects generalize to humans. The present study examined the effects of experimentally induced fear and anxiety on radiant heat pain thresholds. Sixty male and female human subjects were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 emotion induction conditions: (1) fear, induced by exposure to three b...
